Alison Hamilton's Personal Pages

2003-2004

Well, we knew that nothing lasts forever and that we have had so much happiness and fortune over the years. In 2003, we were faced with a challenge that was difficult to bear. Mike was diagnosed with cancer in July and at that point, our lives changed forever. There were several complications which made recovery seemingly remote but he is strong and determined and in spite of his moments of despair, he has come along way on the road to recovery.

Some treatment is available in The Bahamas and we remained here until the time came for radiotherapy, which we decided to take in England as the children are there. So, in October we set off and spent the next three months on an emotional roller coaster, with several incidents which caused fear and trepidation. Having the children, my sister and our friends was a blessing and we will always appreciate their help and support.

We were longing, however, to get away from the cold and winter chills, and returned to The Bahamas in early January to the warmth and comfort of home. I have never been so relieved to be home!!

We continue to hope and pray for Mike's complete recovery but we take each day at a time. Never have I realized until now what love is really all about. This is it! The anguish of seeing a loved one in physical and emotional pain is indescribable but the intensity of love is enlightening. I would not have chosen this way to learn what love is, but it has been an amazing experience.

I have saved the best for last! As Mike was in hospital recovering from surgery, Tamsin was giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. To add to the wonder of the moment, both her husband and our son, Robert, were present at the birth. The few months we spent in England were made more bearable by seeing this gorgeous little girl as often as we could. She brought light into our lives in spite of our anxieties and concerns.

UPDATE! August 2004

We are delighted at last to say that Mike is in remission. It has been the toughest year ever and we are just hoping to enjoy some more relaxing times from now on.
